Portugal was named Europe’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards Europe 2026, held on 17 October in Kotor, Montenegro. Estoril Vintage Hotel won Europe’s Leading Hotel, ending a 13-year streak. The marketing lesson: awards don’t create demand. They amplify it when there is a system behind them.
Every October the same thing happens. Winners post the trophy photo, tourism boards issue the press release, and for a week the whole industry talks about the same list. Then the noise fades.
What separates destinations that turn an award into visitors from those that simply collect trophies is not visible at the gala. It shows in what they do before and after. This is not another list of winners, although you will find all 157 European categories at the end. It is a marketing reading of what sits behind them.
World Travel Awards Europe 2026 winners at a glance
The Europe Gala Ceremony 2026 was the 20th edition of the European ceremony and the first World Travel Awards event ever held in Montenegro, in the organisation’s 33-year history. It took place at Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort. These are the headline titles:
| Category | 2026 winner |
| Europe’s Leading Destination | Portugal |
| Europe’s Leading Hotel | Estoril Vintage Hotel, Portugal |
| Europe’s Leading Luxury Hotel | Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, Türkiye |
| Europe’s Leading Luxury Resort | Domes Miramare, a Luxury Collection Resort, Corfu, Greece |
| Europe’s Leading Beach Destination | The Algarve, Portugal |
| Europe’s Leading City Destination | Lisbon, Portugal |
| Europe’s Leading City Break Destination | Athens, Greece |
| Europe’s Leading Island Destination | Madeira Islands |
| Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination | Madrid, Spain |
| Europe’s Leading Emerging Tourism Destination | Kotor, Montenegro |
| Europe’s Leading Nature Destination | Montenegro |
| Europe’s Leading Airline | Turkish Airlines |
Lesson 1 — Portugal: the award is the output of a system, not the system
Portugal has been named Europe’s Leading Destination in eight of the last ten editions: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2025 and 2026. Greece took the title in 2021 and 2024, according to the official award history. This year Portugal also won 22 of the 157 European categories.
A run like that is not explained by a good voting campaign. It is explained by three marketing decisions that have been compounding for years.
- Digital is the infrastructure. In 2017, alongside the world destination title, visitportugal.com was named the world’s leading tourism authority website. The official portal is not an online brochure. It is where all the demand an award generates lands.
- A country brand with sub-brands that compete on their own. The Algarve, Lisbon, Porto, Madeira, the Azores and the Alentejo enter different categories. Each one earns its own title, its own coverage and its own space in search results. Lisbon and Porto have been trading the city titles for years.
- Activation after the gala. When Madeira retained its World’s Leading Island Destination title in 2020, its promotion bureau announced a dedicated campaign to communicate it. The award was treated as a campaign asset, not a one-day news item.
For a marketing director, the takeaway is blunt. If your website, your segment-level content and your media plan are not ready to receive the attention, the trophy stays in the display case.
Lesson 2 — Montenegro: hosting the gala is a distribution play, not an image play
The smartest marketing move of this edition was not made by a winner. It was made by the host.
Montenegro did not just collect two titles, Kotor as emerging destination and the country as nature destination. It made sure that, for two days, a large share of Europe’s travel decision-makers were physically on its soil. The official agenda included a Friday welcome evening reserved for winners, built around local food, craftsmanship and live music. That is a product presentation to an audience that sells travel: tour operators, agencies, hotel groups, airlines.
This is the reading most coverage misses. For an emerging destination, the value of an event like this sits less in the photo and more in distribution. Every tour operator who experiences Kotor first-hand is a potential sales channel in their own market.
The context explains the bet. According to the official press release, tourism accounts for around a quarter of Montenegro’s GDP, and arrivals grew almost 8% in the first half of 2026, against a global average of 0.4%. The gala is not an isolated move either: this year the national tourism organisation also entered reader awards run by Wanderlust and Food and Travel, and took its conference offer to B2B fairs such as Conventa Meet.
The lesson: one award is a moment. A calendar of moments, combined with B2B action, is a strategy.
Lesson 3 — Madrid: a niche award is worth more when it targets a specific buyer
Madrid did not win the most visible title of the night. It won Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination. For a marketing director, that may be the most profitable title on the whole list.
The reason is segmentation. A generic title like “leading destination” speaks to everyone, so it competes with hundreds of similar messages. A conference title speaks to a very specific buyer: the event organiser, the incentive agency, the travel manager at a multinational. They make high-value decisions, compare few options and look for proof that the city can deliver.
That buyer also searches differently. Their queries are specific: “European city for a 2,000-delegate congress”, “incentive trip venues in Europe”. A well-communicated sector award matches that search intent, and it gives an AI assistant exactly the kind of evidence it needs to justify a recommendation.
Luxury works the same way. A boutique hotel gains more from winning a narrow category that fits its ideal guest than from being one of twenty nominees in a generic one. The award that matters is the one that matches the question your buyer is asking.
The upset of 2026: a 13-year streak ends
The headline almost nobody ran: Estoril Vintage Hotel, in Portugal, is the new Europe’s Leading Hotel. It breaks the run of Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, which had won the category every year from 2013 to 2025, according to the official award history.
What matters for a marketing director is how the incumbent responds. Çırağan does not leave empty-handed: it wins Europe’s Leading Luxury Hotel, and its general manager, Ralph Radtke, receives the Lifetime Achievement Award. It loses a headline but keeps a story.
The lesson is about risk management. A brand that builds its communication on a single title depends on a vote it does not control. A brand with several recognitions, in categories that match its guest, always has something to say.
Country scorecard: who really won the World Travel Awards Europe 2026
Portugal took 22 of the 157 European titles in 2026, one in every seven. That is the result of our own count of the official winners list, and it shows that countries win in very different ways.
| Country | European titles 2026 | Headline wins | What drives the result |
| Portugal | 22 | Leading Destination, Leading Hotel (Estoril Vintage), City Destination (Lisbon), Beach Destination (Algarve) | The country, its regions, its airline and its tourism board winning at the same time |
| Greece | 16 | City Break (Athens), Luxury Resort (Domes Miramare), Family Resort (Sani) | Resort groups such as Domes, plus a cluster of luxury resorts in Crete, stacking titles |
| Italy | 15 | Leading Resort and Luxury Beach Resort (Forte Village), Cultural Destination, Most Romantic Hotel (The Gritti Palace) | A handful of resorts, such as Forte Village and the Almar group, winning several categories each |
| Spain | 7 | Meetings & Conference Destination (Madrid), Adventure Tourism Destination, Luxury Hotel & Spa (Majestic Barcelona) | Niche segments with a clearly defined buyer |
| France | 7 | Luxury City Hotel (The Peninsula Paris), Festival & Event Destination (Cannes), Theme Park Resort (Disneyland Paris) | Urban luxury and major events |
| Ireland | 5 | Island Resort (Inchydoney), Luxury Wedding Resort (Luttrellstown Castle), Meetings & Conference Centre (Dublin) | Experience-led niches |
Methodology: we only counted winners for which the official listing states a country. Sixty winners have no country on their entry, such as international hotel brands, airlines or agencies, so some countries’ real totals are higher. Portugal, for instance, also counts TAP Air Portugal, Turismo de Portugal and the Madeira Islands, which are listed without a country.
The marketing reading: Greece and Italy win mostly through individual resorts and the groups behind them. Portugal wins with the country, its regions, its airline and its tourism board at once. That is the difference between having great products and having a destination system.
Spain at the World Travel Awards Europe 2026
Spain won eight European categories: seven with the country stated in the official listing, plus Real Madrid’s Bernabéu stadium tour. None of them is the headline Europe’s Leading Destination title, for which Spain was nominated and Portugal won again.
| Category | 2026 winner |
| Europe’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination | Spain |
| Europe’s Leading Meetings & Conference Destination | Madrid |
| Europe’s Leading Luxury Boutique Hotel | Gran Hotel Inglés |
| Europe’s Leading Luxury Hotel & Spa | Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona |
| Europe’s Leading Lifestyle Resort | SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort |
| Europe’s Leading Beach Club | Infinitum Beach Club |
| Europe’s Leading Theme Park | Puy du Fou España |
| Europe’s Leading Football Stadium Tourism Experience | Real Madrid – Tour Bernabéu |
In the national categories, Asia Gardens Hotel & Thai Spa is Spain’s Leading Hotel, a title it also won in 2018, 2021 and 2024. Las Terrazas de Abama Suites, in Tenerife, takes Spain’s Leading Resort for the fourth year running. And El Vicenç de la Mar, in Mallorca, wins Spain’s Leading Boutique Hotel for the first time.
The marketing reading: Spain wins where the buyer is clearly defined, such as conferences, adventure travel, themed leisure or luxury spa. It is the Madrid lesson at country scale, and a clear opportunity for each winner to exploit its title within its own segment.
The flip side: what a voted award does not tell you
The World Travel Awards are decided by an online vote of industry professionals and the public. According to the organisation itself, the previous year’s winner and its two runners-up automatically make the next shortlist. That explains part of the long streaks.
It also explains the criticism. Outlets such as Times of Madeira and Ireland’s Travel Extra argue that results depend largely on the ability to mobilise votes. On top of that, the official winner shield is only available through the organisation’s Digital Winner Pack.
None of this invalidates the award as a marketing tool. But it changes how to use it with a high-net-worth audience:
- Never present it alone. For a demanding guest, a voted award carries more weight next to inspection-based or editorial recognition, such as Forbes Travel Guide stars, the Michelin Guide or Condé Nast Traveler lists.
- Don’t claim what the award doesn’t measure. “Voted by the industry” is accurate. “The best in Europe”, with no qualifier, invites scepticism.
- Lead with the proof, not the trophy. What persuades is what sits behind the award: the experience, the data, the guest testimonials.
From award to demand: the five-step system
If your destination, hotel or brand won on Saturday, this is what turns the trophy into visits, bookings and presence in search engines and AI assistants. In this order, over the next six weeks.
- One page per award, in every language of your source markets. Not a carousel of logos: a crawlable page with the exact category, the year, the awarding body, a link to the official source and the experience that earned it. Publish it in English as well as your local language. A Temso analysis of more than 200,000 AI citations in the hotel sector found that, in non-English markets, English-language content takes up to 74% of citations in the Netherlands and 66% in Germany.
- Digital PR with a story, not superlatives. The “we won” release goes out from the whole industry on the same day. Give journalists what sits behind it: what changed, which figure backs it, what comes next. The 5W AI Visibility Index for airlines and hotels concludes that sustained editorial coverage outweighs paid media budgets.
- Structured data on the right entity. Schema.org’s award property belongs on the organisation (the tourism board) or the property (Hotel), using the exact English category name the organisers publish.
- Co-marketing with your destination’s other winners. Portugal doesn’t win only as a country: its regions, its airline and its hotels win too. A coordinated message multiplies the sources talking about the destination and reinforces every mention.
- Consistency on the platforms AI models actually read. According to Gradial’s travel and hospitality study, Tripadvisor is the first or second most cited domain in AI answers about hotel chains. Your listing there, on Google Business Profile and on travel portals should tell the same story as your website.
The underlying point: a language model never sees the trophy. It sees what third parties write about you. An award only counts in AI search when it generates those sources.
How to measure whether an award drives demand
An award you don’t measure stays an anecdote. These are the four signals worth tracking, comparing the six to eight weeks after the gala with the same period last year.
- Branded search in your source markets. Are searches for the destination or hotel name growing in the UK, Germany or the US? Google Trends and Search Console give the first read.
- Traffic and conversion on the award page. Organic visits, backlinks earned and clicks through to booking or enquiry.
- Earned coverage. How many third-party outlets mention the award, and above all how many explain why you won it.
- Presence in AI answers. Fix a set of buyer questions before the gala and run each one several times in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, because answers change from one query to the next.
This is the AI visibility check we use in our audits, adapted to an award:
| Buyer question to track | What to record in each answer |
| What is the best destination in Europe in 2026? | Is your destination named, in what position, and is the award mentioned? |
| Best luxury beach resort in Europe | Is your property named, and which sources does the model cite? |
| Best city in Europe for an international conference | Do sector awards appear as supporting evidence? |
| Best boutique hotel in [your city] | Are your Tripadvisor listing, website or press coverage cited? |
| Is [your hotel] worth it? | Does the answer reflect the award, and is the information accurate? |
Decide before you look at any answer which questions your brand should appear in. Deciding afterwards bends the criteria to fit the report. If after two months the award shows up in no answer and doesn’t move branded search, the trophy exists for your team, but not yet for your market.

Which hotel was named Europe’s Leading Hotel 2026?
Estoril Vintage Hotel, in Portugal. It ended a 13-year streak by Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, which won Europe’s Leading Luxury Hotel instead.
Where and when were the World Travel Awards Europe 2026 held?
At Hyatt Regency Kotor Bay Resort, in Kotor, Montenegro, on 17 October 2026. It was the organisation’s first event in Montenegro.
How are World Travel Awards winners chosen?
By an online vote of travel professionals and the public. Regional shortlists include the previous year’s winner, its two runners-up and entries approved by the organisers.
When is the World Travel Awards Grand Final 2026?
On 12 December 2026 in Tanzania, according to the official calendar.
Does a travel award help a hotel appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity?
It can, but not on its own. AI assistants rely mostly on editorial coverage and third-party platforms. An award has to generate those sources to influence their answers.
